Banned Items

Non-nail drills.  “No licensee shall use any drill or other equipment, supply or product for any purpose other than that for which it was intended. Only drills marked by the manufacturer “For Human Nails” are acceptable,” Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 250-X-3-.02 (6);  “No licensee shall use any craft or hobby tools or modified craft or hobby tools in providing services,” Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 250-X-3-.02 (7).

Aniline derivatives cannot be used for eyebrow or eyelash tinting. “No licensee may perform eyebrow tinting with a product which contains aniline derivative.”   Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 250-X-3-.02 (11).

Callous razors.  “No licensee shall use callous razors in any practice of cosmetology or manicure,” Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 250-X-3-.02 (9).

Foot files with holes. “Cheese grater” type files or other filing implements with holes which can cut the skin are not allowed. “No licensee shall perform any service outside the scope of the Board’s regulatory authority. The Board’s scope of licensure is confined to non-invasive services performed on the epidermis, specifically the stratum corneum and must not alter, cut or damage living cells,” Alabama Administrative Code, 250-X-3-.02(8).

Methyl Methacrylate (MMA).  “No licensee shall use methyl methacrylate, or any other product considered poisonous or unsafe,” Alabama Administrative Code, 250-X-3-.02 (5).

Single Use Items that must be discarded after initial use include:

  • Pumice Blocks
  • Buffers
  • Nail Files
  • Toe Separators and Flip Flops
  • Wax Sticks
  • Disposable Razors
  • Cotton Balls
  • Orange Wood Sticks
  • Makeup Applicators
  • Facial Sponges
  • Roll-on Wax
  • Curling Sponges

Micro-blading: Licensees are not allowed to perform microblading unless the licensee holds the proper permit from the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Micro-needling: Licensees are not allowed to perform micro-needling unless working within the scope of a medical license issued by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners/Medical Licensure Commission.
