How to prepare for a Shop Inspection
To prepare for a shop inspection by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering, it's important to ensure your shop meets all regulatory requirements and standards set by the board. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Review Alabama Cosmetology and Barbering Regulations
- The Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Rules and Regulations are posted on the Board website at www.aboc.alabama.gov. This will give you specific guidelines to follow.
- Focus on key areas such as sanitation, safety, licensing, and operational procedures.
The Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Inspection Report references the applicable rules and regulations related to each requirement reviewed during the inspection. To review a copy of the inspection report, click here.
2. Licensing
- Ensure all licenses, including the shop license and all personal licenses, are current and properly displayed in a location that is easily visible to both clients and inspectors.
- Verify that all staff members are properly licensed for the services they provide.
3. Sanitation and Hygiene
- Sanitation is a TOP PRIORITY for inspections. Follow these best practices:
- Disinfection: All tools (scissors, combs, razors, etc.) must be cleaned and disinfected after each use between clients. Use proper disinfectants, such as EPA-registered solutions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper mixing of disinfectants and minimum contact time. Ensure containers are large enough to completely immerse all tools and that containers are covered with a lid.
- Clean Towels and Linens: Store clean towels and linens in a closed cabinet, and use a separate, closed container for soiled items.
- Workstations: Ensure all workstations, including drawers and countertops, are clean and organized, with no accumulation of dust or hair clippings.
- Restrooms: Restrooms must be clean, sanitary, and properly stocked with soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
- Trash Disposal: Use covered containers for waste disposal. All trash containers must have a lid and must be closed at all times.
4. Equipment and Facilities
- Make sure all equipment is in good working order and meets health and safety standards. This includes:
- Properly maintained chairs, sinks, and other tools.
- Fire extinguishers and first aid kits should be accessible and up-to-date.
- Hot and cold running water must be available.
5. Client Safety
- Provide proper protective equipment (such as capes) as needed.
- Ensure all chemicals (such as hair dyes, perm solutions, etc.) are properly stored and labeled.
- Have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all products used in the shop.
6. General Cleanliness
- Sweep and clean floors regularly, including cleaning debris from workstations and/or hair from the floor between clients.
- Ensure proper ventilation and air circulation in the shop.
- Keep clutter to a minimum, including waiting areas and storage rooms.
7. Inspector Visit
- Prepare your staff: Educate them on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and safety at all times. They should know the regulations and be able to demonstrate compliance.
- Have all relevant documentation (licenses, inspection reports, apprentice records, etc.) easily accessible for review.
- Be ready to answer questions from the inspector regarding hygiene practices, safety measures, and sanitation procedures.
8. Post-Inspection
- Take any feedback from the inspector seriously and address any noted deficiencies promptly.
- Maintain regular cleaning and operational standards to ensure your shop is always in compliance, not just for inspection day.
By following these steps and keeping your shop in compliance with the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering standards, you'll be well-prepared for an inspection.
