How do I register to take the exams?

Once you have completed either an Apprentice, Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetic, Natural Hair Stylist or Manicure program, your Sponsor or Instructor will fill out a Written Exam Application for you.  You are required to fill out part of this application and sign it.  You must provide a valid email address on your application. You are required to send a copy of your original transcript (and English translation if needed) as proof of completing at least the 10th grade or the equivalent.

The Board office does NOT schedule either of your exams for you.

Please note that candidates must bring their Candidate Admission Letter (provided to the candidate by Prometric after the exam is scheduled) and two forms of identification (one must be a government-issued photo ID) to the exam. Failure to bring these items will result in entrance denial and you will be marked as a "NO SHOW" for the exam.

Prometric's reschedule policy is shown on the Candidate Admission Letter you will receive prior to your test, but a summary of it is that candidates who are unable to attend their exam must reschedule the exam through Prometric no less than 5 calendar days prior to the exam date. Failure to reschedule an exam in a timely manner will result in a "NO SHOW" being recorded. Exceptions to the 5-calendar-day policy will be made on a limited basis (i.e. jury duty, death in the immediate family, military deployment, etc.).

Exam fees are non-refundable and if a "NO SHOW" is recorded, candidates will have to submit another application and exam fee to ABOCB before they can reschedule through Prometric.

What if I need accommodations for a disability?

Important information for Practical Examination sanitation requirements:

In response to the shortage of disinfectant wipes during the pandemic in 2020, the NIC Executive Board temporarily authorized all practical test centers to accept "best attempt" or "simulated product" for disinfectant wipes. The Executive Board has continued to monitor this situation and has authorized the reinstatement of the original requirement regarding the use of disinfectant wipes and will no longer accept "best attempt" or "simulated products" in the testing centers beginning on November 1, 2021.
